With my wife and son in Seoul

Who is Phil Rhie?

Designer by trade.
Family at heart.

Candid and a little serious when you meet me. Warm, easily delighted and a lot more fun once you know me.

My career started on the early web, back when the best way to learn it was to live on it. I hunted for music, stayed up too late on forums, and found the corners where people made things for each other. Before long I was making them too: pages on GeoCities, rudimentary Flash games, and eventually websites that brought small online communities together. I studied computer science, kept designing for the web after graduating, and followed the work into UX as the field took shape.

Fifteen years in, one thing hasn't changed: the work has to be good and the product has to succeed, whether it's judged by clients or customers. I've followed interesting problems, and great teams, through agencies, venture-backed startups and enterprise. Agencies taught me speed, startups taught me to find what people actually want, and enterprise taught me how decisions get made, and how long they take.

I spent nearly five years leading design at Experian. I'm at my best in the space between teams. There, that meant getting product, engineering and business to agree, making the case for work nobody else was championing, and building a team culture where a designer grew into a promotion. I want the work to hold up, and the team to come out stronger.

Off the clock

Detail runs in the family

Most of my time away from work goes to my wife and son, and most of that goes to travel. We plan trips around the table: a Michelin-starred dinner is the biggest treat we give ourselves, and we take in all of it, from how the menu is paced to how the room makes you feel. A lot of our trips run through Disney, which is experience design built down to the last touch. Someone has thought about every detail, and there's real joy in noticing what they noticed. We film it all for our family vlog, Chil Travels.

I come back to work fuller than I left, with more ideas and more patience for the people I make things with.
